Counting every bite of your meal could help you lose weight, a small study suggests.

The researchers asked 61 volunteers to count each bite they made each day and committed to having 20 percent to 30 percent fewer bites in the next four weeks.

They also tracked their intake of liquids other than water.

The 41 participants who kept their vote lost about 4 pounds (two kilos) during that month.

The Brigham Young University study was recently published in the journal "Advances in Obesity and Weight Control".

Consuming less food makes a difference, lead author Josh West, an assistant professor of health sciences, said in a university press release.

"We are not advocating for people to die of hunger, what we are talking about is that people can eat less than they are currently used to eating."

More research is needed to determine if this approach leads to long-term weight loss, said study co-author Ben Crookston, an assistant professor of health sciences.

"We feel very good about the amount of weight they lost given the relatively short study space," he said in the news release.

"Now we need to do a follow-up to check if they do not recover the lost weight, or if on the contrary they begin to lose weight, more than they should."

The researchers said that counting each bite whenever we chew could offer an effective and affordable method for weight loss for 70% of people suffering from this problem.

We are consuming considerably more calories than we used a generation ago or two generations ago.

At the same time, we are much less active, "Crookston said. "Even a 20 percent reduction can make a difference."

Other research at the University of Iowa (United States) suggests that the ideal would be to chew at least 40 times each bite.
